TRIVIA: Following
the huge success of the 'Bad' album, a proposal was made to release
a special Michael Jackson greatest hits collection. The album was
developed, and subsequently released initially as a promotional
disc titled 'The History Of Michael Jackson'; a limited 17-track
disc released only in Japan (Cat No QY-8P-90094). Plans for a commercial
release of this unique disc were unfortunately shelved, and it would
take another 5 years before a greatest hits album of Michael Jackson's
back-catalogue (bearing a similar name) would be revealed.
In 1995, it was
announced that the new hits collection would be included as a double-disc
pack, together with Michael's new album, titled "Michael Jackson
- History - Past, Present And Future - Book I."
The first single to be released from the new album - "Scream"
- was accompanied by a spectacular special-effects video, and reached
a chart position of number 3; it had been considered a dead-cert
that the powerful song, featuring Michael and Janet Jackson would
fly straight in at the number 1 position. Questions were raised
in the press regarding whether Michael Jackson had lost his touch
- a number three position was oddly seen by the media as being abysmal.
In fact, the following single releases were huge successes; "You
Are Not Alone" peaking at number one, "Earth Song"
being a huge number one Christmas smash (in fact his biggest selling
UK single ever, with over 1 million copies sold!), and 'They Don't
Care About Us' and 'Stranger in Moscow' both being number 4 chart
hits. The album ended up being one of the most successful Michael
Jackson albums regarding the chart positions of it's single releases
in the UK. Since it's release, the album has topped a huge 15+ million
sales (30+ million when you consider it is a double-album) - a disappointing
result by no stretch of the imagination!
The album is presented
in a large double-disc case with front and rear sleeves and a comprehensive
booklet charting Michael's career. It includes two special Gold-Discs
with 'etched-effect' artwork.
